In Memory

David Gerdes

Gerdes, David Eilert passed away unexpectedly on 3/19 at the age of 76. Known as "Papa D" to his family, he was larger than life and will be missed every day. David spent Trig. his career in the grocery business, first at Lund's and then as an executive at Jerrys Foods for many years leading their HR department, while serving on the Grocers Union board. He retired at age 70 and spent his time traveling, reading and spoiling his grandchildren. A prolific reader, he delved in to the Torah, Bible and Koran, as well as everything from fiction to history on his kindle. He studied the bible daily and applied the word of God to his everyday life. And it is written "This day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it" Psalm 118:24 Traditions were particularly important to him, and he passed these on proudly to his children and grandchildren. Nothing pleased him more than a good glass of wine, a fire in the fireplace, and a great meal with his family. He loved a spirited discussion whether politics or sport, a good game of cribbage, and family celebrations. He is survived by his loving wife Sandy, children Sara Mekler (Mark), Stefani Moon (Brian Maher), Melissa Markham (Pete), David Burkhardt (Sydney) and grandchildren Amanda, Zach, Wyatt, Dana, Emerson, Quinn, Maclaren, Caleb, Collette and August. Also survived by sister Phyllis Riedler and sister and brothers-in-law Kathy Gerdes, Kathy Poucher, Steven Smith (Shirley) and nieces and nephews; dear friends David and Cheryl Royer (Emily, Juliana and Olivia). Predeceased by grandparents Birdette and Sara Colby, parents Florence and Eilert and brother Craig. His frequent calls and texts to his grandchildren during Twins and Vikings games will be missed forever. Donations preferred to your local food shelf in keeping with his lifelong love affair with food. A memorial service will be help at a later date. If you wish - you may raise a glass to him using David's favorite "Lafamila" with your family.
